Connect – the communication disability network
Impact report 2006/07

‘...how very impressed I am with the way you are telling the story. It is very moving, very immediate, and very insightful – an example to us all’ Charity chief executive

Connect works with people who have aphasia; a form of communication disability, usually caused by stroke.

The 2006/07 impact report set out to convey the daily struggle of life with aphasia and the role Connect plays in helping people adjust to a new reality.

It focuses on Susan and her journey from ‘brain closed’ (her aneurysm) to ‘moving on’ (re-engaging with the wider world) – via the stepping stone that Connect provides.

The challenge was to use Susan’s first-person recollections (the aphasic voice), while making the document accessible and compelling for a wide range of readers. The result is an authentic and powerful account of aphasia, from the inside out.
